Why should your dog enter a fitness program?
The fastest and most effective way to achieve complete health at any age or stage of life is through a specially tailored fitness plan. A good canine exercise program includes five components: Balance, Strength, Flexibility, Endurance or Cardio Fitness and Mental Challenges.
Young dogs will improve body awareness (i.e. they learn they have four feet) and old dogs will maintain mobility. Even athletic dogs that are competing need a good all around conditioning program to help prevent injuries.
Getting Started:
Before starting a conditioning program, your dog will need to come in for an evaluation to determine their starting condition and so we can design a program specifically for your dog. We will be checking gait, pulse, respiratory, measuring muscle mass, testing range of motion, and gathering multiple other details so we can design a program that is best for your dog.
To test for the dog's appropriate level, they will need to be able to do the following cues on command:
-
Sit
-
Down
-
Stand
-
Target the Hand
Once we have determined the appropriate level and assigned the exercises, you will be given a schedule to be done daily. You are not doing every exercise every day. Just like with us, the muscles need time to rebuild after exertion.
When we have enough dogs evaluated and have designed an exercise program for them, then we will schedule a class time for everyone to come and use the exercise equipment. We will have a training exercise circuit and each dog will do its assigned exercise on the equipment.
